It’s usual to feel sad at times in our life, but if that sadness becomes long-standing then you may be depressed. Depression, or clinical depression is a major depressive condition characterised by feelings of persistent low mood, loss of enjoyment in interests that were once pleasurable, loss of appetite, feelings of guilt and hopelessness. You may also feel like life will never improve or you lack the motivation to activate yourself. Depression can affect your sleep, thoughts and behaviour, your physiology and relationships. These symptoms can make daily tasks difficult. Medication, prescribed by your GP and talking therapies can alleviate symptoms.
When depression is severe, feelings can seem overwhelming and suicidal ideation can often prevail. Experiencing thoughts of not wanting to be alive anymore or like nothing is worth living can be common with depression.
